One value that is critical to our mission but is sometimes misunderstood is Equitable Access. It's important to be clear: Equitable Access does not mean "equal" access. Giving everyone the same thing is easy, but it often fails. Our goal isn't to be equal; it's to be equitable.
What is Equitable Access?
Equitable Access means providing the specific support or resources each individual needs to have a genuinely equal opportunity at a successful outcome.
Think of it this way: If we were distributing bicycles, giving a 6-foot-tall adult and a 4-year-old child the exact same adult-sized bike would be equal, but the child wouldn't be able to ride it.
Equitable Access means giving the adult a standard bike and giving the child a bike with training wheels or a tricycle. Both people now have the access they need to successfully ride a bike, which is the desired outcome. The resources were different, but the opportunity was the same.
In short:
Equality implies: The same resources for everyone.
Equity implies: The right resources for everyone to achieve the same result.

Equitable Access in Applied Behavior Analysis
In ABA, our work is inherently focused on individualization, which makes this value one of our most important. Here are some examples of how we demonstrate Equitable Access every day:

Why This Value Matters
Equitable Access is not just an ideal; it's a clinical necessity. Our work is about driving meaningful change, and if our staff, our clients, or their families cannot fully access the tools and support they need, we can't achieve that change.
When you practice Equitable Access, you are:
Honoring Individualization: You recognize that every person—client or colleague—comes with unique barriers and strengths.
Driving Better Outcomes: By removing specific barriers, you increase the probability of skill acquisition and generalization for our clients.
Fostering an Inclusive Workplace: You ensure that every staff member, regardless of their personal circumstances, has the tools to succeed in their role.
By living this value, we continue to uphold the highest standards of care and truly make a difference in the lives we serve.
